The Company’s story is a grand one and the book explains how the idea for the company germinated, how Master Mariners then gained their proper seat at the nation’s table through unparalleled Royal patronage, a Royal Charter and admittance to the City Of London’s prestigious Livery. Based on years’ of research and full access to the Company’s archives it explores every phase of its existence and documents the achievements and challenges of each decade up to the present day. It describes the MMSA’s attempts to smother the Company at birth. It describes the Company’s influence on national and international maritime affairs, how its organisation and operation have evolved, how it adjusted to the collapse of the British merchant fleet and much more. It also explains how the Company is launching its second 100 years as a very different body to that established in 1926.
